In My Garden!

It's hard to believe but spring is already here in my garden. I have been so busy with my work that it's been hard to keep up with everything. Right now in the garden is my old standby: kale. The plants are now six months old and still producing bowls full of tender leaves every week. Kale is wonderful sauted in a little olive oil, lots of chopped garlic, and plenty of red pepper flakes.

The gourmet lettuces, arugula and spinach is beautiful and we are picking enough to have big salads every night along with scallions, cilantro, parsley and radishes. The garlic is coming along but won't be ready to pick until mid-summer.

The snow peas have been a little disappointing this year. I planted them three times and nothing was coming up, until I discovered the crows were eating them as they sprouted hoping I would plant more! This time I had netting covering them. Sorry crows! They are finally growing to a decent size and soon we will be enjoying peas sauted with garlic and tossed with pasta and Laura's spicy peanut sauce.

I should be planting the cucumber and tomato starts this weekend. I started them in little pots a while ago and they are now ready to go into my raised beds in my greenhouse.

We have recently been harvesting broccoli raab, one of our favorite dishes. The best recipe for broccoli raab with linguini was included in the old Kitchen Garden Magazine, given to the author by an Italian man he met on a train while traveling through Italy in 1971. Here is a link to a blog I wrote in February, 2014, about broccoli raab along with the Italian man's recipe. /blog/2014/2/4/in-my-garden-broccoli-raab.html
