In My Garden: Watermelon

I’ve always loved watermelon from very young age and over the years. I stopped eating it because the melons you buy in the stores and farmer’s markets have no taste. They are spongy and bland, not sweet.

So last year, I decided to grow my own watermelon. I chose a variety called Sunshine that is yellow inside. The description sounded really good so I thought I would give it a try. The flavor is amazing! Super sweet and juicy. My wife usually salts her watermelon but there was no need on my Sunshine melons. They are bursting with flavor and reminds me of the watermelons of my childhood.

This year I planted the same melon. I used only two seeds that I had saved because I didn’t have much room in the garden. To my surprise the melon plant grew huge vines covering an area close to 15 feet x 15 feet and the melons are over 20 pounds each. And again this year they have an absolutely incredible flavor. The vines  produced at least 10 melons so far and are still going. I’m sure I’ll be growing watermelons every year from now on.

In the photo below you can see how I covered the watermelons with a mesh netting, which prevents the animals who get into my garden from sampling the melons, which they did quite frequently last year.
