Julian, California: Bathroom and Night Stands

Master Bath Vanity

I decided to write this blog to compare styles with the exact same type of wood I used in the Laguna Beach black oak blog. The home in Julian, California, where I did the work is a modern free-style cast-in-place concrete home. A large old black oak tree had died on the property and the homeowner wanted to arrange for it to be cut down, milled into lumber, and dried to be used at some future date.

I designed the bath cabinets and end tables to reflect the architecture of the house and of the other work I had done previously in the Julian home, using that black oak tree lumber. Black oak has more color variations than other oaks. We select the pieces to show off those color variasions, figures, grain and natural defects as part of the design but in a very modern context. Every piece is free form just like the house. A challenging but exciting project.
