Owls and a Mini Pony Carved Chest of Drawers
This piece of furniture is truly a functional art piece. Made of solid quilted maple inside and out with Tennessee red cedar drawer bottoms to keep away the moths and silver fish. It’s absolutely beautiful, and the wood is amazing. The contrast between the contemporary rectangular case, dovetailed corners, museum quality wood and hand-carved barn owl flying to its nest of babies and small pony that all have special meaning to the client shows that contemporary design can be more than straight grain and flat surfaces. The chest was made of one large thick slab and we cut and made all the pieces. The client gave me the layout she wanted for the asymetrical drawers. It was very cool but also very challenging. The drawers have slides that are a soft close with only a push to open.
