My weekend teaching a woodcarving class

In December of 2013, I received a call from a gentleman named William Ng. William has a woodworking school in Anaheim called William Ng Woodworks. He was inquiring if I would be interested in teaching a woodcarving class at his school. Apparently, a friend of his had heard of my teaching woodcarving classes many years ago through Palomar College in North County San Diego. William had gone to my website and had been very impressed with the detail and variety he saw and thought that a woodcarving class taught by me would compliment his other schedule of classes.

William Ng Woodworks school has an excellent reputation, with people coming from all over the world to attend the variety of fine woodworking classes held there. Although I love teaching woodworking and woodcarving classes, my time constraints over the last several years have prevented me from doing so. William said I could teach a two-day weekend class, which would still allow me to put in my full work week in the shop. That sealed the deal and I excitedly looked forward to the weekend in April that I chose.

The students in the class had varying degrees of experience, and one person had even taken calsses from me in the past. Everyone was enthusiastic and eager to learn, all of them putting a lot of effort into the class which made it a very worthwhile teaching experience for me. The project I chose for them to do was carving an avocado branch with a bird sitting on it. I would demonstrate a step and then they would do the same step until we had all completed the carving. It was a great experience for me, and I hope it was for the students as well, and I will gladly teach more classes again in the future, as I would love to see the art of woodcarving carrying on to the next generation of young woodworkers.

Check out William Ng's website where you can sign up for many different classes. http://wnwoodworkingschool.com/
