Furniture for a One-of-a-kind home in Southern California

I was working on a very unusual home in Julian in the mountains east of San Diego for over 2-1/2 years. I built all of the exterior doors and windows, using jatoba on the exterior and curly maple on the interior. I also built the interior doors and the kitchen. Because of the free-form nature of the architecture everything we built was curved. To read about the home go to my January 2, 2014, blog titled "One-Of-A-Kind Home In Southern California". Below is a picture of the home.

More recently the homeowner asked if I would build several pieces of furniture for the home. I have worked with the family for many years, not only on this home in Julian, but in another of their homes, and really enjoy doing projects with them so of course I said I would love to design and build the furniture.

One of the pieces the family wanted was a sheet music stand to sit next to my client's mother's rosewood piano. The cabinet is made up of compound curves, built out of highly-figured curly maple with rosewood inlay. It's simplistic beauty doesn't reflect the amount of work that went into building it and I am extremely pleased with how it turned out.

I also designed and built a bench for the living room out of quilted maple with natural live edges and a jatoba pull-out shelf with outlets to recharge all the families mobile devices.

In the tower observatory was my client's office, so I built a desk and filing cabinet. The desk, which has a fold-down top with a live edge, is made of one large slab of quilted maple, and has drawers and lift-up storage. The tower office is a small space, so the fold-up and fold-down table top on the desk is quite efficient for the space. I also built a small filing cabinet out of the quilted maple to match the desk.

Next to the desk is a step ladder that leads out a window made of curly maple and jatoba. The step ladder was made especially for that window so that the family could go out on the rooftop for stargazing. I had to try it out and let me tell you the views are spectacular.

It's always fun for me to be given projects where I can be creative and unique in my designs, and work with incredibly stunning wood, and I can't wait for the next project!
