A Eucalyptus Tree Design for a Point Loma, CA, Entryway

A contractor I had worked with in the past called and asked if I would meet him and his clients in Point Loma (San Diego) to look at an entry he needed made for a custom home he was building. The architecture was modern Spanish Revival with clean lines and a contemporary edge to it, fitting very well with the 1920-1930's architecture in the neighboring homes.

The husband is an artist and wanted something to fit with the architecture but also something unique and special. I came up with the design of a simple Spanish-style door in solid mahogany with a speakeasy window and a hand-forged copper eucalyptus branch that incorporated the handle into it. The half-inch thick glass is cast for texture. I also made two sconce outdoor porch lights on either side of the entry in copper, with slumped, painted and fused glass, with eucalyptus branches to match the door.

I went on to make some interior doors, several large light fixtures, the staircase, and architectural millwork in several of their rooms.
