Madrone Tree in Washington

Picture an incredible setting in the Puget Sound region, a coastal area in the Pacific Northwest, in the state of Washington. Then picture a new home with an amazing hand-carved entry door. This is the request I received from the owners of that property, along with numerous photos they sent me for inspiration. Working closely with my clients, we came up with a fantastic front entry design utilizing the local flora and fauna as design elements. Graceful fruiting Madrone trees, yellow daffodils, tree squirrels, bumblebees (you need to look close) doves, Satyr Angelwing butterflies, and colorful Kingfisher are all native to the island, and I incorporated all of these natives into the entryway.

The mahogany is heavily hand carved. I used mahogany with a marine satin finish because of my client's concern with all the rain they receive on the island. The glass is 1/2-inch thick carved and fused art glass with wood branches integrated into it. I carved branches as the door pulls so as not to disrupt the design.

Because my clients had a contractor already on site I shipped the door to their location, pre-hanging it into the jamb along with all the hardware, trim and seals. I usually prefer to deliver and install my doors, but will also ship pre-installed if my clients want that option. I only wish I had been there to install the door and take photos of it in it's beautiful new setting.

The door turned out beautiful, depicting the local native plants and animals who live in Puget Sound, Washington.
