Live-Edge Dining Table

This was a really fun project combining a walnut live-edge dining table top with heavy free-form hand-forged iron work. I had to tap into all my sources to find just the right top. My client wanted a specific width and length and also wanted a special and beautiful grain and color. After searching all my out-of-state sources I ended finding the perfect piece in San Diego county.

The base, made of 3/4" thick x 3" wide steel, is quite heavy, but it needed to be heavy to have the right proportions to the top. I forged the legs into tapers both in thickness and in width and then forged the curves into a free-form shape that I had a vision of.

After forging all the pieces I welded them together and ground the welds to seamless joints.

Once the finish was put on, the beauty of the wood really stood out. Nature is really remarkable. The free-formed iron base worked incredibly well with the live-edge top.
